Welcome to the website of St Peter’s Church, Woolley
We are part of the Diocese of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, and the Church of England.
St Peter’s is a medieval church with some good late medieval stained glass. We are the only church serving the village of Woolley, just off the M1 motorway at junction 38 and 7 miles south of Wakefield. Click here to view map.
If you are thinking about having your wedding at St Peter's, we offer Marriage Preparation to help you make it the best of beginnings.
Our sister church is in the neighbouring village of West Bretton, home of the world-renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The Church in West Bretton is an Anglican-Methodist Local Ecumenical Partnership. Sunday services there are at 10.30am each week. Anglican Holy Communion is on the 4th Sunday, and usually we have Holy Communion there on Tuesdays at 10.30am.

News
Mice in church
The new oak cross, candlesticks, and alms dish, made for us by Robert
Thompson’s (the mouse-man) of Kilburn, were dedicated on Sunday
May 3rd. These were commissioned to replace the brass items stolen in
the burglary in February 2008.
T Club in June
Our June meeting on Thursday June 18th is a lunchtime visit to The Potting
Shed at Silkstone, 12noon for 12.30pm.
Please let Maureen Grace know if you’d like transport, or can offer
transport.
Toddler Praise
Toddler Praise in June moves from the usual 2nd Friday to the 3rd Friday,
June 19th, and will be a Teddy Bears’ Picnic – in the Vicarage
garden if fine. Same time, 10am.
Woolley Horse Show
Saturday 26th July sees the annual Woolley Horse Show, at Beacon Hill
Farm on Intake Lane in Woolley.
Woolley Horse Show has something for all the family, also Catering and
Refreshment Tents, besides many Craft Stalls and Trade Stands.
As usual St Peter’s Church is having a stall, selling home-made
cakes and preserves. If you can help us set up the stall and dismantle
it, or staff it during the day, or bake for it, please let Marion Davis
know.
Open Church @ August Bank Holiday
On the Sunday and Monday of the August Bank Holiday (30th & 31st)
we’re planning to have Church Open Days, when people can tour the
church and look at all the interesting artefacts we have, including the
medieval silver currently at York Minster, and ancient records from the
Archives. We’re hoping to devise an interactive tour for children.
On Sunday 30th there’ll be the usual morning service at 10.30am,
plus an Evening Service at 6pm.
On Monday 31st the church will be open from 11am to 7pm.
Refreshments will be available in the church during both days.
Harvest Festival – diary date
Advanced notice that at St Peter’s we’ll be celebrating our
Harvest Festival on Sunday September 13th. This is to coincide with the
visit of Salome Johnson from our link church in Tarime, in Mara, Tanzania.
After the 10.30am Harvest Festival Service we’ll be having a Harvest
Lunch in the Village Hall.
Visitors from Mara
The visitor chosen by our link parish of Tarime in Mara, Tanzania, will
be Mrs Salome Polycarp Johnson. Stephen and Jan had a meal at Salome’s
home during their visit last May. Salome is married to Polycarp Johnson.
She is a retired teacher, and is now a director of St Jude’s School
in Tarime, a boarding school for primary age children, where English rather
than Swahili is the language used in class.
Visitors from Mara will be arriving on Friday 11th September until Friday 2nd October. Salome is being paired with another lady, Mrs Felister Gati Chacha, also a primary school teacher, who is linked to Batley Parish. Salome and Felister will be staying together in Woolley until Sunday 20th, when they will move to hosts in Batley.
Please think about our farmers
Seeing cattle and sheep grazing in our local fields is a joy, and restful
too. Footpaths through fields for dog-walking is one of the benefits of
living in the countryside. But please keep dogs on leads – cattle
and sheep are easily distressed by dogs running free. And please don’t
allow dogs to foul the paths or the grazing-land.
Farms in and around Woolley village are working every day including Sundays
and holidays. Tractors with trailers need a wide access to turn into fields
and farmyards, so please think before you park around the village. Parking
too near a gateway to a field or farm means farm vehicles can’t
get in and out. And on our narrow lanes, please park as close to the edge
as possible – even if it means your passengers getting out of the
car before you park.
