Welcome to the website of St Peter's Church, Woolley
We are part of the Diocese of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, and the Church of England.
St Peter's is a medieval church with some good late medieval stained glass. We are the only church serving the village of Woolley, just off the M1 motorway at junction 38 and 7 miles south of Wakefield. Click here to view map.
If you are thinking about having your wedding at St Peter's, we offer Marriage Preparation to help you make it the best of beginnings.
Our sister church is in the neighbouring village of West Bretton, home of the world-renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The Church in West Bretton is an Anglican-Methodist Local Ecumenical Partnership. Sunday services there are at 10.30am each week. Anglican Holy Communion is on the 4th Sunday, and usually we have Holy Communion there on Tuesdays at 10.30am.

Placement in Woolley
For the next few months we're being joined by Stephen Oakley, from Lundwood,
who is training for Ordination with the Yorkshire Ministry Course. Stephen's
placement with us is so he can experience life in a different parish and
gain some other insights into the church's ministry and context.
Church Council Grants
Each year Church of England churches give some of their income to Christian
Missions and Charities. This is from money received each week on the offertory
plate or by direct debit (please note, not from donations or fund-raising).
This is in keeping with the Prayer Book rule that “the money given
at the Offertory shall be disposed of to such pious and charitable uses,
as the Minister and Church-wardens shall think fit”. £1,250
was agreed, and this is split 4 ways – £500 to the Wakefield
Cathedral Project 2013 Shares Scheme, and £250 each to the homeless
charities St George’s Crypt, Emmaus, and Church Housing Trust.
Service of Lessons and Carols.
Diamondbacks Youth Group sang O Holy Night as part of the service, and
during the service congregation members were invited to write Christmas
prayers on stars which had been hand-made and decorated by Diamondback
members. The congregation hung these stars on the Christmas tree at the
end of the service, when mulled wine and mince pies were served. A retiring
collection raised £240 for Crisis at Christmas, a charity for the
homeless.
Church Christmas Card
The annual Church Christmas Card, sponsored by church members and given
to everyone attending Christmas services, raised £210 for Christian
Aid. This provided 7 goats and 35 mosquito nets for families in Africa.
Christingles
The Crib & Christingle Service at The Church in West Bretton on Christmas
Eve raised £96.38 for the Children’s Society. The Nativity,
Crib & Christingle at St Peter’s Woolley raised £350.17,
making a total of £446.55 for needy children and families.
Palm Crosses
If you’ve saved your palm cross from last year’s Palm Sunday
service, please bring it back to church on or before Sunday February 19th.
The tradition is to burn old palm crosses to make the ash for our Ash
Wednesday service (February 22nd this year). You’ll receive a new
palm cross on Palm Sunday, April 1st.
