Welcome to the website of St Peter’s Church, Woolley
We are part of the Diocese of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, and the Church of England.
St Peter’s is a medieval church with some good late medieval stained glass. We are the only church serving the village of Woolley, just off the M1 motorway at junction 38 and 7 miles south of Wakefield. Click here to view map.
If you are thinking about having your wedding at St Peter's, we offer Marriage Preparation to help you make it the best of beginnings.
Our sister church is in the neighbouring village of West Bretton, home of the world-renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The Church in West Bretton is an Anglican-Methodist Local Ecumenical Partnership. Sunday services there are at 10.30am each week. Anglican Holy Communion is on the 4th Sunday, and usually we have Holy Communion there on Tuesdays at 10.30am.

Gate repairs
Many thanks to Peter Tolson and Stephen Oakley for repairing the Clapper
Gate by the main entrance to the churchyard. The original wood had rotted
and the clapper mechanism needed an overhaul, but now it looks and works
like a brand-spanking-new one.
They have also remade the Kissing Gate leading from the churchyard into
the field.
Tarime Call My Bluff
Very many thanks to all who helped organise, took part in, and supported
our Tarime Call My Bluff Wine-tasting Evening on 2nd March. 67 guests
enjoyed themselves, and raised £590 towards the cost of building
a new Vicarage for our link parish of Tarime in the Mara region of NW
Tanzania.
Church Annual Meeting
On Sunday April 15th is our Annual Church Meeting. It’s when the
Church Council has to account for what it has been doing, and how it has
been spending the church’s money. The accounts have been independently
examined. A report is given on the Church Council’s proceedings,
and on the fabric, goods and ornaments of the church. Then those on the
church’s Electoral Roll get the chance to elect people to represent
them on the Deanery Synod and on the Church Council.
T Club theatre visit
The next meeting of the “T” Club will be a trip out on Saturday
afternoon 28th April to the Lamproom Theatre in Barnsley to see The Sound
of Music. We have a few spare tickets if you’d like to go but have
not yet booked – we’re going by mini-coach, leaving the Village
Hall around 1pm. Please contact Maureen Grace if you’d like a ticket.
Young Adventurers change of Sunday
After the April meeting of Young Adventurers (Sunday April 1st) we shall
be moving Young Adventurers to the 2nd Sunday of the month.
There are two reasons – we’ve had to miss some months when
a Bank Holiday falls at the first weekend (eg January, May and June this
year), and people don’t always get their Parish Newsletter in time
to remind them for the first Sunday.
So, the dates for the rest of this term are ..
Sunday April 1st, meet in the Village Hall at 10.30am for the blessing
of Palms.
Sunday 13th May, meet in church at 10.30am and walk to the Village Hall.
Sunday 10th June, meet in church at 10.30am and walk to the Village Hall.
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Woolley Street Party
A Date for your diary
Tuesday 5th June 2012
We are planning a Street Party at the Rec/ Village Hall on the afternoon
of Tuesday 5th June from about 2pm to 4pm. This is an extra Bank Holiday.
The whole village is invited. We are hoping for lots of help in the preparation
and on the day and so far the Residents’ Association, the Village
Hall committee and members of St Peter’s Church are keen to be involved.
We will be having a meeting shortly to plan the ’do’. We already
have a local brass band booked and the bar will be open.
If you have some ideas, can offer help from baking a cake to putting up
some bunting and think you will be able to join the fun on the day please
contact Penny Woolhouse
“Woolley Sheep” Limited Edition Print to commemorate
the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
The Woolley Village Residents’ Association are hoping to commission
a limited edition print by West Yorkshire Artist Kate Thornton, to commemorate
the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. You can look at her work at Katethorntondesign.com
and a similar design produced for the Holmfirth area will be displayed
on the village notice board.
Kate uses antique maps with silhouettes of birds and animals. Her design
for Woolley called “Woolley Sheep” would be sheep and lambs
with a collage of antique maps showing our local area of Woolley, Notton
and West Bretton.
The likely cost for an A4 Print would be £15 displayed in a cream
mount signed by the artist with words commemorating the Diamond Jubilee.
Please contact Penny Woolhouse to register your interest.
Please support our sister Church in West Bretton ...
Sunday 22nd April, 3pm in the Church in West Bretton
A concert of South Asian Music, part of the Manasamitra Spring Festival
of the West Yorkshire Arts Organisation.
Coffee Morning, in aid of church funds, Saturday 12 May
10am to 12noon. Tickets £2 (inc. coffee & scones)
Cake stall, tombola, books, Fairtrade, raffle.
This year The Church in West Bretton celebrates 30 years of being a
Local Ecumenical Partnership. On 7th September 1982 local Methodists and
Anglicans covenanted “to do together all that we can, and not to
do apart what we should do together”. This meant sharing not only
the same building (the former Methodist Chapel in the village) but also
being one Church, worshipping together and sharing totally in everything
churches do.
The 30th Anniversary is being marked this year by a special Covenant Service
on Sunday 23rd September, at 10.30am. The Methodist Minister from 30 years
ago, Kathleen Richardson (now Baroness Richardson) will lead the worship,
and the Bishop of Wakefield is the preacher. A 2-course hot lunch will
follow at 12.30pm, for which tickets will be available.
