Welcome to the website of St Peter’s Church, Woolley
We are part of the Diocese of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, and the Church of England.
St Peter’s is a medieval church with some good late medieval stained glass. We are the only church serving the village of Woolley, just off the M1 motorway at junction 38 and 7 miles south of Wakefield. Click here to view map.
If you are thinking about having your wedding at St Peter's, we offer Marriage Preparation to help you make it the best of beginnings.
Our sister church is in the neighbouring village of West Bretton, home of the world-renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The Church in West Bretton is an Anglican-Methodist Local Ecumenical Partnership. Sunday services there are at 10.30am each week. Anglican Holy Communion is on the 4th Sunday, and usually we have Holy Communion there on Tuesdays at 10.30am.

Open Church: Treasures Revealed in Wakefield
From Saturday 29th May to Sunday 6th June Wakefield District is hosting
a festival celebrating the hidden multi-cultural treasures of the area.
Churches and other places of worship are being invited to specify when
they will be open to visitors, and all details will be included in a Festival
Guide distributed to households. Treasures Revealed is an initiative of
the Churches Regional Commission, and has already been successfully run
in Leeds and Bradford. St Peter’s Woolley will be one of the many
places for people to visit during the Festival, so this event will now
replace the proposed Open Church Weekend we had been planning for the
end of April.
Wedding Belles and Memories
As part of our Treasures Revealed here in Woolley, Penny Woolhouse would
like to put on a display of Wedding Dresses through the decades. If you
still have your wedding dress and would be prepared to loan your dress
for display together with a photo of you on your big day, please contact
Penny Woolhouse or The Vicarage (01226 382550)
If you were married at Woolley Church this would make the display very
special indeed.
Flower Festival 2010
St Peter’s Church holds a Flower Festival every two years, usually
the last weekend in June to coincide with St Peter’s Day. This year
we have decided to move the Flower Festival to the weekend of September
18th/19th to fit better with people’s holiday arrangements. We hope
to have another Scarecrow Festival in the Village that same weekend, and
the Residents are planning a Ceilidh.
Seven fat cows
When Stephen came as our Vicar in June 2003 his “licence”
was for seven years. That end is fast approaching. The good news is that
the past seven years of plenty are not to be followed by seven years of
famine – rather, the Bishop has agreed to renew Stephen’s
licence for a further seven years.
